TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The invention involves the treatment of autoimmune disease. This research team works on autoimmune diseases in MRL/lpr mice. MRL/lpr mice develop spontaneous cutaneous lesions, resembling human discoid lupus erythematosus. Mononuclear cell infiltrations occur in joints and in lacrimal and salivary glands resulting in rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome respectively. Beginning at 8 weeks of age, MRL/lpr mice develop glomerulonephritis, interstitial nephritis, and vasculitis. and females die at an average age of 4 months. With the help of the present invention, these various diseases are cured and markedly improved survival is observed in treated MRL/lpr mice. The invention also describes a method to use the therapeutic agent.
