TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The inventors have identified a new family of acid sensing ion channels detecting local acidosis and generating pain. They have isolated the gene and elucidated its functional activities. This molecule, ASIC, is a Mammalian neuronal acid sensing cationic channel and more specifically a proton activated sodium channel gated by H+ and mainly permeable to Na+. ASIC responds to acidity by generating an electric current which is then relayed towards the spinal cord and the brain.
