TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The invention describes a device that allows the measurement of friction and wear of dry or lubricated contacts in a wide range of load (from 100 N to 20,000 N) and velocity (from 0.1 m/s to 5 m/s) by controlling simultaneously the load kinetics and the contact kinematics. The control of high velocity operating conditions is a simple way to understand the thermal effects in extreme pressure lubrication. This new machine is unique tool to build friction force/velocity/pressure maps for many materials and lubricants. The contact is made between one rotating cylinder and three planes at 120°. This simple geometry induces a drastic reduction of the manufacturing cost of the samples These three line contacts give high wear surfaces that are required for a comfortable analysis of the chemical transformation of surfaces under severe tribological conditions. The choice of an isostatic contact requires the accurate contol of the applied load. A new mechanical system and an isostatic clamping guided on three axis have been invented to equally spread and balance the load on the three line contacts.
