CONTEXT
Diabetes affects today more than thirty million people worldwide and is the fourth leading cause of mortality in the
United States. In
Europe, the disease affects between 2 and 5% of the population. There are four categories of diabetes. In
France, 3 to 4% of people who suffer from non-insulin dependent diabetes (or type II diabetes). To treat this disease, experts use products that stimulate insulin secretion including sulfonamides (sulfonylureas). The major drawback of such molecules is related to difficulties of quantification. In fact, an overdose can cause hypoglycemia with risk of hypoglycemic coma. Efforts are made to find substitutes for sulfonylureas to treat type II diabetes. Biological tests have also confirmed that the substance 4-hydroxyisoleucine has an activity that stimulates the secretion of insulin. However, the market requires an active and more perfect knowledge of the molecule in question.
