COMPOSITE MATERIAL AND ITS USE FOR THERMAL EFFECT MANAGEMENT IN A PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROCESS

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

This invention describes a composite material which is a combination of :
• an active solid (such as activated carbon),
• micro nodules of PCM (phase change materials).
It allows thermal management of reversible and cyclic physicochemical processes for one exothermic period and a reverse endothermic period.
The size of the micro nodules varies from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters and the phase change temperature of the PCM can be adapted to the concerned physicochemical process.

Experimental results obtained are:
• PCM contained in the composite materials doesn't change the active solid adsorption capacity.
• Thermal properties
Adsorption is an exothermic reaction, thus CO2 adsorption, for example, results in a temperature growth of the adsorbent bed. If adsorbent is associated with appropriate PCM, then the exothermic effect can be compensated by PCM endothermic fusion reaction.



PCM' fusion limits growth temperature, which is illustrated by higher calorimetric peaks without the use of PCM. On the other hand, peaks' area (which represents adsorbed CO2 quantity) is the same with or without PCM.
