NEW STRONTIUM-DELIVERING BIOMATERIALS FOR ANTI-OSTEOPOROTIC APPLICATIONS
Principal investigator : JALLOT Edouard

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

This invention describes the enhanced bioactive properties of strontium-doped glasses. Under biological conditions, the materials form a bone-like apatite layer at their surface with increased kinetics of reaction. This newly formed layer allows strontium-doped glasses to harmoniously bond with the surrounding bone tissues. Moreover, tuning both the materials’ composition and its porosity parameters makes it possible to control the release rate of osteoinductive ionic dissolution products, and thus the materials’ final bioactive properties. In particular, strontium-doped glasses can deliver critical concentrations of strontium towards their biological environment: this is a key parameter because strontium promotes bone formation and osteoblasts replication while inhibiting bone resorption by osteoclasts.
