CONTEXT
The
importance of the CD40/CD40L couple in the immune response has led to use of
antibodies directed against these two molecules for therapeutic purposes, in
order to inhibit or activate the immune system.
Different
previous works based on anti-CD40L antibodies had produced encouraging results
in the treatment of some autoimmune diseases. However, the particular valency
of the CD40L molecule in order to form, with CD40, hexavalent complexes, makes
it difficult to produce functional antibodies capable of interfering with the
functions of the CD40/CD40L couple. This valence also make the discovery of new
synthetic compounds able to interfere with the functions of the couple difficult.
