TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
This invention describes a tunable filter using two coupled cavities for improved spectral characteristics. It includes a first fixed thick resonant cavity with multiple transmission resonant modes and a second thin resonant cavity with one transmission mode. The second cavity can be tuned electrostatically so that its resonant mode couples with one of the modes of the first cavity, providing the desired spectral response. When the thick cavity is designed so that its modes coincide with the set of wavelength channels of a WDM system, the filter can be tuned discretely on each of these channels.
