By their high therapeutic index and low toxicity, peptides are considered as active pharmaceutical ingredients. Due to the development of new delivery systems increasing their bioavailability, it is expected that the therapeutic peptides market is expanding rapidly in the coming years. However, their synthesis is still confronted to many development problems. In fact, known production procedures (liquid phase, solid phase, by recombination), need an enormous amount of solvent for the synthesis, including solid support (2000 to 5000 kg for a large peptide). Thus there is a clear need in “green chemistry” due to the seriousness of environmental problems.
