TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
This invention describes a new reinforced polyamide material and the one step process to obtain it. More precisely the structure of this material is made of a polyamide matrix with an elastomer dispersed homogeneously at nano scales inside by polymerization via reactive extrusion. A blend of polyamide with PDMS was first sythesized. The obtained product has the good mechanical performance of polyamides, and also significantly improved resistance to impact and crack propagation at a wide range of temperatures (between -50°C and 150°C). Because of the nanostructure, a lower elastomer incorporation level is required to obtain the same impact resistance properties as the commercial products. Due to the specific synthesis the incorporated elastomer can vary: polyisoprene, polybutadiene, butadiene copolymers, ethylene propylene copolymers, silicones... An in-situ control of the structure of polyamide blends at nano scale level is possible with this process which could “customize” a polyamide with desired physical, chemical and optical properties.
