IONIZING RADIATION DETECTOR HAVING PROPORTIONAL MICROCOUNTERS
Principal Investigator: M. LEMONNIER
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The present invention describes a gas detector that detects ionizing radiation, such as .alpha., ß, gamma, X or ultraviolet radiation from numerous proportional microcounters assembled to form a proportional counter. Each portion of the counter incorporates an upper electrode portion and an insulating layer portion, which is perforated, as well as a lower electrode portion that constitutes an independent microcounter, also known as a unit cell.
For the detector described in the invention, the primary electrons resulting from the ionization of radiation by the gas are multiplied by a high local intensity electric field in a gas. Several types of these gas detectors are known and used by the expert.
