Currently used permanent data-storage media (hard drive) involve storage densities around 100Gbits/inch2, and densities of 450 Gbits/inch2 are expected to be available around 2009.
However, due to the specific limitations of the currently used methods, alternate data storage procedures are needed to obtain ultra high-densities. Scanning-probe methods, such as AFM-based data storage, are currently being investigated towards this goal and storage densities over 1 Tbits/inch2 are expected.
However, materials involving scanning-probe mediated reversible surface modifications, or in other words rewritable media, have not yet been described.
The present patent involves a series of solid materials involving AFM-mediated reversible surface modifications.
