In the current development of imaging technologies, new contrast agents and tracers are necessary to improve visualization. Nanoparticles appear to have the highest potential because they can combine multiple properties such as magnetic, luminescent, radioactive and even therapeutic properties.
At present, three imaging nanoparticles have been approved for commercialization and biomedical diagnostic use. Two have been developed by Amag Pharmaceuticals (treated separately in this study) and one by Bayer. Market segments are therefore still to conquer which resulted in a very high research and patenting activity in the last years.
Institutional applicants have a specific positioning on the sector, while only important industrial structures of the imaging field build up their portfolio notably in the US and Europe. On specific segments, Asian applicants are noticeably emerging.

IP strategies of the different players seem to show an underlying trend to claim nanoparticles combining multiple properties and covering a large range of applications.
