Nanoparticles for bioimaging patent landscape - 2010/05

In the current development of imaging technologies, new contrast agents and tracers are necessary to improve visualization. Nanoparticles appear to have the highest potential because they can combine multiple properties such as magnetic, luminescent, radioactive and even therapeutic properties.

At present, three imaging nanoparticles have been approved for commercialization and biomedical diagnostic use. Two have been developed by Amag Pharmaceuticals (treated separately in this study) and one by Bayer. Market segments are therefore still to conquer which resulted in a very high research and patenting activity in the last years.

Institutional applicants have a specific positioning on the sector, while only important industrial structures of the imaging field build up their portfolio notably in the US and Europe. On specific segments, Asian applicants are noticeably emerging.

The present report analyses the patent environment and notably highlights the various types of nanoparticles (magnetic, quantum dot …) that have been developed and their potential applications in bio-imaging. IP strategies of the different players seem to show an underlying trend to claim nanoparticles combining multiple properties and covering a large range of applications. In some cases, this situation can act as a blockage for future filings.

In a sector where more than 800 patents and patent applications have been filed, this « IP Overview – Nanoparticles for bio-imaging » provides you with a comprehensive panorama of the intellectual property landscape and helps you:

-          Position your company’s R&D and IP Portfolio

-          Identify key inventors and key players involved in the development of specific nanoparticles

-          Understand the collaboration networks and their dynamic

N.B.: A three months access to the full patent database is also included
