NEW PROCESS FOR BIODEGRADABLE POLYLACTONES
Principal Investigator: P. LEPERCHEC
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

A new method is described to synthesize biodegradable polylactones, statistical (s) or (b) block co-polylactone and the corresponding polyalkylene modified polylactones. Polymerization includes cyclic lactones such as caprolactones, valerolactone, lactide and their mixtures. The polymerisation is performed in batcher, in bulk, producing polymers with a molecular weight up to 50 000 Daltons under mild temperature conditions. Interestingly, the invention can be used to produce PEG-(or PEG-PPO)-modified polylactones on a large scale as a one pot synthesis. Block (s)- or (b)- optically active co-polylactone and the corresponding PEG homologues are available by this process.(Coupling small molecules and controlling physico-chemical properties are possible by introducing chemical functions on these polymers. )
