The invention concerns mouse strains and cell cultures that lack a protein involved in intracellular cholesterol trafficking. Said animals or cells show accumulation of lipids in the endosomal-lysosomal system. The inventors found that mice lacking this protein develop at early adult age (2-3 months) symptoms very similar to those of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which gradually destroys sharp vision by the macula.
