CONTEXT
Stem cells hold great
promises in medicine and pharmacology as they are considered a powerful donor
source for cell-based therapy in several degenerative diseases and injuries,
provided that diseased cells are substituted with the right healthy cells.
However, the widespread application of stem cells in clinics still depends on
the capability of researchers to overcome
major practical challenges, not only regarding the improvement of isolation
and maintenance of stem cells, but also the control of the differentiation
process that, depending on its efficiency, leads to heterogeneous cell
populations that are able to cause tumour side effect to patients.
